Over a year later, Musk’s Neuralink still 6 months from human trials

I would race, not run nor walk, to the nearest exit before participating in trial of this device.

With COVID boosters dragging and 70K deaths projected, Biden admin scrambles

Thanks for the tip. It was a pretty mild infection (sore throat, 1/2 day low fever, felt cruddy 2 days), but there is def value to timing peak immunity to peak exposure risk. And I'll check out the linked sites...thanks for those.

With COVID boosters dragging and 70K deaths projected, Biden admin scrambles

Fair points. He brought it home (DFW) from Germany--I don't know what's raging there. And even if it's possible to determine the actual variant, I understand there is little value to doing so other than tracking prevalence of variants over time. I doubt my insurance would foot the bill for that. ;-)

With COVID boosters dragging and 70K deaths projected, Biden admin scrambles

According to CDC guidance, "If you recently had COVID-19, you may consider delaying your next vaccine dose (primary dose or booster) by 3 months from when your symptoms started or, if you had no symptoms, when you first received a positive test."* My adult son just cleared a covid infection last...

Webb telescope captures dazzling views of Neptune and its moons

The JWST pic is fantastic, but I am awestruck with what we were able to do in 1989. (1970s tech?) Such a beautiful view.

Today’s best deals: Apple MacBook Air, Ring Fit Adventure, and more

I picked up the MacBook Air M2 at Costco a few days ago, and though the price was $50 higher, the cost of Apple Care+ was ~$100 less. Plus the return period is longer.

“Black widow” neutron star takes an hour to orbit the star it’s roasting

Yes, the at least implied conclusion of every technical paper ever written: further study is needed. :)

Yet another reason to eat rolled oats (or other cooked cereal) for breakfast.

How to give an electric eel an MRI

This is why I read and support ars--you can't get this kind of thing anywhere else.

Despite mountain of evidence, Elizabeth Holmes claims to remember things differently

I'm curious--does anyone know if she is testifying with the same affected baritone that Carreyrou described in his book, or did she drop that?

It seems to me this belongs in the Smithsonian.

Scientists tracked these spiders’ every movement as they wove their webs

I'm really glad there are people with the interest and support to do such magnificent work!

Spiders are much smarter than you think

When my daughter was young we could not have dogs due to her asthma, so we ended up with birds. I'd long admired birds from afar, but did not have any up close to appreciate. Since having them for several years I am amazed and humbled by the cognition that is apparent in those "bird brains"...

Mystery of deadly US infections solved; aromatherapy spray at Walmart to blame

This is the CDC at its finest--kudos to the team that cracked the case!

Biden sued by Air Force officers who compare vaccine rule to death sentence

When the commander-in-chief orders you to get the vaccine, you get the damned vaccine. As many others have pointed out, this principle was clear and followed for all the other vaccines our service members received either upon signing up or later-developed (like anthrax). The USS Roosevelt was...

Cherry-picking data was routine practice at Theranos, former lab worker says

I listened to the audio version of the book, read by Carreyrou, on a long road trip a few years ago. I really enjoyed his delivery, especially when reading the portions describing Theranos' trashing of him--it was personal to him.

Forced use of horse dewormer on COVID patient overturned by Ohio Judge

The article doesn't say, but of course this guy received treatment that was otherwise consistent with the current standard of care, which may well have included monoclonal antibodies. Assuming he survives, it will be because of his highly trained medical team and approved medications, not...

4th person in US mysteriously stricken with deadly bacteria from South Asia

I'm going to do as Pig in Pearls Before Swine, and just pull the covers over my head for a while.
