    Gaming mouse working on glass?

I have 8 MX Revolution mice. They'll work on just about any surface but oddly they seem to work best on the old textured Dell mouse pads. The black ones work better than the white pads.

How a day driving high-downforce cars at VIR taught me I’m OK being slow

Wings were in use on some dirt track Supermodifieds in the late 50's. Sprint cars soon followed. The effectiveness of some I've seen from back then may be questioned today. Smokey Yunick put a wing on Jim Rathmann's 1962 Indy car for testing and it was outlawed...

Not bad for a 3 1/2 year old PC

It looks like a few have missed the point being that benchmark was obtained using ALL hardware from 2015 or earlier. The Samsung 850 Pro was the system drive used not the NVMe drive (it's a dual boot config). The CPU is four years old as is the mobo and RAM. At times the "latest and greatest"...

Not bad for a 3 1/2 year old PC

It's been the X99 since April of 2015. Hasn't even been out of the case since then. The RAM hasn't been out of the mobo since around one week later. The Asus D2X is ten years old now (!), the optical drives are from 2010, the Corsair H105 from early 2014 and the production dates on the...

How not to move your rig to a new place or 'Is my motherboard dead?'

See if you can find out how to reset the BIOS to default. If you have more than one stick of RAM the chances of fux0ring all of them are quite small. The fact the PC booted into Windows at first indicates the issue is something else. I think you meant an X58 motherboard and considering the age...

Not bad for a 3 1/2 year old PC

At the moment all but the CPU, PSU, GPU and NVMe drive are from the original build. Other than the NVMe drive everything is over 3 years old including the July 2015 Win 10 Enterprise operating system installation. That Passmark score was done on the Samsung 850 Pro still there from the original...

Not bad for a 3 1/2 year old PC

There's a long story behind this PC but here the short version. Around four years ago it began with an Asus Z87 Sabertooth and 4770K I scored off Craigslist for $350. A n00b attempted a build and bent the pins in the CPU socket. Of course because of that he couldn't get it to work and the mobo...

Not bad for a 3 1/2 year old PC

It's had some upgrades along the line from parts trading, Craigslist and Ebay. This is the latest Passmark benchmark I did earlier today. I think it's still got a few years left in it (this isn't the one I posted the pictures of last year).

Trying to assemble a computer but it won't work

Remove the power supply and motherboard from the case. Remove everything from the motherboard but one stick of RAM, the CPU and CPU cooler. Place the mobo on a non-conductive tabletop then connect the ATX and 24 pin power connectors. Connect a monitor to the onboard graphics port on the mobo...

Hard drive not detected - replacing controller board to save data?

That was the case with the infamous IBM 75GXP "Deathstars". I was part of the class action lawsuit plus a private one. I'd been buying them in bulk direct from IBM (something they attempted denying even though I had the invoices and credit card statements). It took me over a year for them to pay...

Hard drive not detected - replacing controller board to save data?

The "click of death" is fatal for hard drives. The heads are crashing into the platter(s), that's the noise you're hearing. The controller board is still working and replacing it won't cure anything. Replace the hard drive.

    Instability going from 16GB (2x8) to 32GB (4x8) DDR4. Tweaking questions within!

Run the RAM at its specified voltage. If in doubt call Corsair and talk to "The RAM Guy". When I began using 64GB of RAM I had issues at first as well. He told me to increase the voltage from 1.5 volts (DDR3) to 1.65 volts and that cured everything. I asked him if the increased voltage would...

7200rpm drive in an external enclosure for xb1x

The last external hard drive I bought was a 6TB Western Digital from Newegg for $109 a couple of months ago. Close to 200mb per second transfer rates with USB 3.0 (Asus X99 Deluxe mobo). Last night that same drive was $119 on Newegg. That's very fast for an external drive no matter what speed...

Don't drop a speaker on your PC

If one of my 163 lb EV Sentry III's fell on a PC it'd flatten it.

Broken SATA connector on my hard drive

If you can find another hard drive the same exact make and model of yours you can take the drive controller board and swap it for the broken one. I've done that with success in the past. Look for a used drive on Ebay and if there are any buy the cheapest one.

In which steelghost water cools a computer (again)

Looks good however I personally would have gotten out the Dremel tool, cut holes for the tubing then mounted the radiator on top of the top case mesh with only the bottom cooling fans inside the case. Doing that adds a lot of working room inside the case plus is good for a few more degrees of...

    Your highest efficiency PSU?

I have a few each of Seasonic and Corsair Platinum & Gold PSU's as well as a handful of lower output Bronze units by both too. I never buy junk power supplies.

PC randomly refuses to boot...no pattern.

R9 290's & 290x's are power hungry beasts. They can also run very hot. I have three of them currently in use and the smallest PSU I'm using is a Seasonic 850 watt unit. Personally I'd use a bigger PSU, make sure to have the latest GPU and mobo-related drivers installed. Also, run Memtest to make...
