FBI says search warrants not needed to use “stringrays” in public places

It has long been clear that the FBI's wishlist is bottomless ... and since Americans have seen fit to create two Republican houses in Congress, the abuse of their supposed 'privacy' is going to go on for a lot longer. Being 'bothered' is an insufficient response. The market for technical...

Lavabit founder wants to make “dark” e-mail secure by default

Once again, readers who "don't know how this will ..." need to stop and realize that Phil Zimmerman created PGP. Whatever concern they think of on the spur of the moment, Phil knew about years ago.

Going postal: Reporter sues government for spying from USPS network

The lady wrote a whole book on the subject ... amusing how many readers doubt her credentials or ability to muster people able to assemble damning forensics. There's a difference between opinion and informed opinion. It'd be nice if people realized how uninformed they are ... especially...

Most participants in “citizen science” projects give up almost immediately

Not a big surprise. As much as I'm into astronomy, the majority of these projects are soon very tedious - and the chance of a payoff quite small. The researchers need to pay more attention to "gamifying" the projects - I'm sure a lot of people would be glad to help with that.

IEA: Renewables will be world’s second-largest energy source by 2018

Apple relents, begins selling "old" Final Cut Studio again

They did the same thing with Hypercard ... ten thousand users, many of them in education, little businesses ... all overboard and deaf to protests. A few years back they broke up the $1000 Logic audio DAW into 'Pro' and $300 'Express'. Someone clearly clueless stripped MIDI out of Express ...

College upperclassmen still fail at scientific reasoning

The DOI at the end of the article is non-functional. It's great that this problem has been noticed, but it isn't just a science ed problem ... it's a problem, and a major one, all across the spectrum of human communication. We think we're all living in the same world, but each of our brains has...

It is possible to kill the evercookie

Better Privacy works, but all the LSO's are exposed after they're created -until- BP does its thing. Want to end LSO's entirely (on Windows, can be used elsewhere)? Go to the user folder >appdata>roaming and find the 'Macromedia' folder. Trash it. Replace it with an empty text file named...

Musopen raises $40,000 to set classical music "free"

First of all, I applaud the idea -in principle-. I've been a classical listener for decades, and am amazed how many people are missing out. However ... I've only heard a few of Musopen's performances. Mostly they have been less than passable; in one case (Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an...
