Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

The image quality is essentially the same between a mirrorless and DSLR. The sensors are sometimes literally the same, and there are high walkout) quality lenses for all systems these days. The difference that exist are either between categories (APS-C vs FF) or they're differences in operation...

Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

You're right, but that's the level most people - including the silent majority of DSLR users - are using their cameras. Still, if you're going to use a decent full frame DSLR, you may as well do it right. Otherwise, you may as well just use a crop DSLR or mirrorless with a kit lens.

Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

I assumed it was a trollish joke. No camera I know of - especially any pro/enthusiast camera - has support for PNG.

LOL Seriously though, wouldn't that be funny?

Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

Unfortunately not. Plenty if Lollipop or later Android phones don't support the new full Camera 2 (and 3) API. My brand new Moto X Pure doesn't do RAW because it doesn't support the newer API. The Nexus phones from the 5 on can do RAW.

Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

Between a bridge camera and a phone with a good camera (iPhone 6S, Nexus 6P, Moto X Pure), I'd take the phone any day, and I'm someone willing to carry around a camera almost everywhere I go. Make it a Sony RX100 (or the recent Canon and Panasonic clones) and you'd have something worth carrying...

Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

Yes and no. Obviously, the level of quality is not much of a consideration to him or most. That's fine, though it makes me wonder what the point if a comparison like is. Like, I'd be happy to do a comparison between my CR-V and a Formula 1 or Lamborghini or wherever. I don't know anything...

Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

Yes and no. I think for a wild apples to oranges comparison it works. Far more people still shoot DSLRs than mirrorless. That said, I love my A7 and collection of small primes. Full frame that I can literally fit into my pocket, if I must - I've done so to get it into a venue, separated body...

Shootout redux: Smartphone camera vs tricked-out DSLR, one year later

Just FYI, 35mm film doesn't have a 35mm diagonal, it's 43mm. 35mm is called 35mm because it's the width of the film, including the sprockets. The actual imaging area is 36x24mm.

Doctor Who gets lengthy sabbatical as showrunner Steven Moffat quits

Yes, exactly! It's deployed so often and without any build-up that is always feel saccharine and eye-rolling.

Doctor Who gets lengthy sabbatical as showrunner Steven Moffat quits

I did, yeah. "Children of Earth" was definitely good. On the other hand, "Miracle Day" was so bad that we didn't even bother finishing the series. I think we gave up after the second or third episode. A lot of series two was disappointing if I recall. I'm not opposed to having the romance...

Doctor Who gets lengthy sabbatical as showrunner Steven Moffat quits

The kludginess to his resolutions is one of the things about Moffatt which has drive me nuts. There's no emotional payoff, and often made me wonder why I'd bother watching the middle 20-30 minutes, since it was often more or less unrelated to the contrived solution that wrapped up the episode.

Doctor Who gets lengthy sabbatical as showrunner Steven Moffat quits

Exactly! His premises were often solid, but it'd completely fall apart. So many episodes had a structure like this: 1. Excellent to OK premise 2. Extended meandering full of foreshadowing that could have developed into something interesting in later episodes, but never was. 3. Explosion...

Doctor Who gets lengthy sabbatical as showrunner Steven Moffat quits

BAAAAH I'll do my best to see the silver lining. I hope Chris Chibnall can bring it back some, but I'm going to keep my expectations tempered for the time being. I haven't gone to see which episodes of Torchwood he wrote, but Torchwood wasn't exactly the greatest, either. Started OK, but at...

Doctor Who gets lengthy sabbatical as showrunner Steven Moffat quits

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES COME ON Anyone else happy about this? I'd gladly have Who go on sabbatical until 2018 if it meant getting someone new. I was expecting at least two more years of Moffat before we finally got rid of Moffat, surprised and happy that there's not. :-)

Say “Cyber” again—Ars cringes through CSI: Cyber

Ars should spend some time working in the power industry. *EVERYTHING* is Cyber-*. Cyber security, cyber asset, cyber system, etc. We have this exercise every few years called CYBERSTORM. Always cracks me up, seems so corny. That said, I have heard an explanation for why the word "cyber" is...

North Carolina citizenry defeat pernicious Big Solar plan to suck up the Sun

As someone who works for an electric utility, this would not surprise me. Then again, as someone who works for a electric utility, I wouldn't be surprised if the dumb statements by the residents of Woodland were 100% authentic and unprompted.
