Even from the employer side where credentials are “free” there a loss when everyone is at least 25. As much as I hate to say it, youth has its place too. But for companies I at least kind of get it—interviewing is hard, high signal proxies are nice. It’s the post hoc rationalizations for those...

Why can’t we teach what needs to be taught to everyone in the first 13 14 years of universal education? Where does it end? I see candidates now for entry level positions with master’s degrees. Is 30 going to be the new 18 soon?

I think it’s a wonderful idea. The problem is, as with most hazing, many of the people that have gone through it forget that it was pointless and cruel and instead convince themselves it’s important that everyone else go through it. I see all the time defenses of hiring only out of classic CS...

My concerns with post senior IC roles: - Many don’t seem to really be IC roles. It’s not the same thing but with more difficult problems, but instead much of your time is spent on mentorship, coordination, executive handholding, etc. They are closer to dev than pure management roles but not...

I’m curious how the number of small landlords will impact the dynamic if and when there’s a downturn in real estate prices. On the hand they don’t need to mark to market, on the other if the economy is doing poorly generally you could see contagion from unemployment.

Eh. There’s a famous case study taught in business school where Subaru did a study and found that it’s cars were being disproportionately bought by lesbians and schoolteachers. So they started running marketing campaigns aimed at lesbians and school teachers. I don’t think there’s anything...

Pretty sure that’s what continuous monitoring means. No full reinvestigations for everyone but they reserve the right to do one if they feel like it.

It’s a lottery ticket, for sure, but it’s probably worth 20 minutes of your time. More make believe stuff than this has paid off (at least for a while)—look at freaking doge.

The way I see it, granted from limited context, the main options are: 1) while these programmers are still around task them with simplifying and documenting the code based so they are approachable by mere mortals 2) up the pay/benefits/independence/whatever to continue to be attractive to new...

I guess that makes sense, but it seems that’s more likely in a fairly certain losing bet rather than a hugely uncertain bet. The too complex to be analyzed part seemed to gesture at the latter.

I don’t get the idea of uninvestible risk. Surely that’s a matter of price? Ethical concerns aside there’s some interest rate at which I’d buy Russian dollar bonds. Maybe it’s 100,000% percent but it’s something.

Old school QA seems to be a dying art in favor of endless automated tests. I think it’s a bit of a shame, among other reasons because the slightly adversarial nature of a separate QA department meant more creativity in finding broken things in my experience. Anyway, point is you probably...

I don’t think the issue is the time or space cost but the readability. The streams version (LINQ equivalent in java) is significantly better on that metric imo.

Upfront I should say that I’m personally invested in Java’s continuing relevance since it’s my strongest language. However, even so I’m not convinced it has a bright shiny future. Like social media and dating apps, programming languages seem to inevitably get older and older user-bases. The...
