NASA declares that its Space Launch System rocket is now ready to fly

I'm honestly surprised at how many of you think this blowing up would be the end for SLS. Or that its days are numbered and regardless of how successful this flight is, Starship will take over. NEVER underestimate the willingness of Congress to spend money in their districts. The pork must...

Netflix loses 970,000 subscribers, says ads and new fees are key to recovery

Congratulations Netflix, you are now essentially AT&T, who responded to annual subscriber losses with repeated higher prices. It might help your revenue in the short term but it sure as hell won't solve your subscriber problem in the long term.

Despite mountain of evidence, Elizabeth Holmes claims to remember things differently

I have limited courtroom experience but will relay what I learned. When you have a client that is definitely guilty, or at least looks obviously guilty, you do your best to mitigate the damage. This is easiest by humanizing the defendant. Elizabeth needs to appear as real, vulnerable, and human...

The first Arab mission to Mars is delivering some interesting science

And much of western technology can thank early and important developments by Arab scholars in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and other areas of mathematics.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus are down. Here’s what we know

No social media that replicates Facebook will be any better than Facebook, at least when it comes to most of the negative aspects of getting sucked in to the platform. Signal is a good alternative to WhatsApp for direct communications. I would argue social media isn't needed at all.

We’re about to run out of Atlantic hurricane names—again

We need a whole skit dedicated to hurricanes from Keegan Michael Key.

We’re about to run out of Atlantic hurricane names—again

But once you name it, then you get attached...

The Space Force is starting to lean into innovative launch concepts

Here's a nitpick for you: Space Force was literally created out of the Air Force Space Command, aka Space Command, which was around from the early 1980s until 2019. I wasn't referring to the US Space Command as you've described, but the AF Space Command, since the discussion was about splitting...

The Space Force is starting to lean into innovative launch concepts

I'm not saying the Navy doesn't have any bases, obviously. I'm saying the Navy's personnel live and work on their ships when leaving port for 6 months or more, while AF personnel operate out of their bases. It makes sense to focus on ships for the Navy and airbases for the AF. Until we see an...

The Space Force is starting to lean into innovative launch concepts

The Navy's ships, especially its carriers, ARE its bases. The two forces operate in such wildly different ways as to make that statement meaningless. The real benefit of Space Force is narrowing the scope of spending between that and the AF. It allows both forces to concentrate on what they do...

Blue Origin is developing reusable second stage, other advanced projects

And now we're back to my original question, why is anyone continuing to doubt SpaceX? The mentality of everyone else needs to be this: SpaceX is relentless and will achieve every one of their goals, no matter how difficult they may appear. What can we do to compete?

Blue Origin is developing reusable second stage, other advanced projects

That's exactly what Starship is, a reusable second stage intended to survive reentry. They've started testing heat shield tiles for the belly of the ship, and the upcoming orbital test will see it circle the Earth and land near Hawaii. *Ninja'd by ColdWetDog

Blue Origin is developing reusable second stage, other advanced projects

No one is complaining about the new development process. If anything, we're saying it's about damn time. Their failure to compete and their position as Old Space 2.0 is real, and this is one of the first glimmers of hope that Bezos sees the problem and is turning it around. All that said...

Blue Origin is developing reusable second stage, other advanced projects

Eric, it would be very interesting to see a compiled history of the naysayers of SpaceX (and other New Space players), every step of the way. That these executives continue to cast doubt and somehow keep their jobs is maddening. Their employees have to see such successes and wonder when their...

Blue Origin is developing reusable second stage, other advanced projects

Which advisors are telling Bezos that SpaceX is unlikely to succeed? After all they've accomplished? At what point will Bezos, Bruno, and other Old Space leaders stop assuming SpaceX will fail and start revamping their own processes to better compete?

Rocket Report: Super Heavy lights up, China tries to recover a fairing

Agreed. And nothing about using the law to force NASA to use SLS makes it any less obsolete.

Judge tosses “reprehensible” lawsuit comparing COVID vaccine to Nazi atrocities

Just add it to the list of PPE they need to keep their job. If kids can be required to get vaccines to attend public school, healthcare workers can be required to get vaccinated to help prevent spreading this to their patients, specifically the vulnerable people they are trying to protect.
