thanks for all the help everyone. I think i've had it beat into me that i'm not going to get what i'm looking for at my price point. Looks like i'll save my pennies for a few more years and then do this right.

THanks for the input and the thread. Corking is something i didn't consider but that looks to be a very reasonable option. My fans are already running at low speed (5 v) , since running them at full speed leaves me concerned that my tower might take flight if it catches an updraft.

Well, i found out what was going on with my monitor, and thought i would share just incase someone else found themself in a similar fix. Under the onscreen controls of the monitor was a manual adjustment for the Phase setting. I fiddled with it some, and my display is now actually more crisp...
