Turns out it's a common problem of the faceplate not aligning with just the TB ports. Everything looks fine but a little piece is overhanging the port. It took a magnifying glass to be able to see it. Easy to bend it up and snip it off.

Supposedly you can connect MDP to a thunderbolt port but it doesn't fit. The port is on a gigabyte Z77 something or other board. Is Apple back up to their old tricks? As in maybe the port is slightly different on a Mac. Seem to remember running into something like that with DVI.
