Study pinpoints when bow and arrow came to North America

I've always assumed that the damper arctic environment was probably the main reason that atlatls weren't entirely supplanted by bows & arrows in the north. Most of the materials available to make bows and bow strings would have been affected by moisture. Woodworkers soak wood to make it pliable...

Man takes herbal pain quackery, nearly dies, spends months in hospital

Is no one else as astonished as I am that those warning pages are still up on the FDA website? Someone in MAHA land isn't doing their job.

Man fails to take his medicine—the flesh starts rotting off his leg

It's undoubtedly to take her mind off all the horrible RFKJr. related stories (not to mention cuts to Medicaid in the BBB) she has been writing lately.

Trump’s EPA to “reconsider” ban on cancer-causing asbestos

I think that would be one of those non-tariff trade barriers Trump is always ranting about. But I'm sure he has plans to deal with that nonsense. We'll make those countries import American made asbestos, while we import Trump approved Russian asbestos. Or something like that. To be fair I don't...

American Science & Surplus is fighting for its life. Here’s why you should care.

If I lived anywhere near them I'd be in a least once a week. Our local equivalent, Hardwick & Sons https://hardwickandsons.com has moved to Idaho, and now doesn't appear to have quite the selection of esoteric used stuff they once did. I used to stop in and ask "What's new that's used?". You...

Tapeworm in fox poop that will slowly destroy your organs is on the rise

I'm going to have to look up which companies make those benzimidazole drugs and grab some shares on the next market dip. Doughnuts to dollars that stuff will be the acclaimed (I can't imagine by who) miracle cure for bird flu, or whatever the next epidemic is. Heck, why wait, maybe RFKjr can...

White House plagued by Signal controversy as Pentagon in “full-blown meltdown”

I was deciding whether to upvote this or not, and my brain locked up trying to decide who was most incompetent, Hegseth or RFKjr. Not to mention most of the rest of Trump's appointees.

Controversial doc gets measles while treating unvaccinated kids—keeps working

When I saw the video of Edwards claiming to have gotten the MMR vaccine as a kid, and that it wore off, I recalled seeing on a CDC website that some of the MMR vaccines given in the '60s were ineffective and that if you don't know which kind you got, you should get revaccinated. It's a bit...

AP: Trump admin to kill IRS free tax-filing service that Intuit lobbied against

I've always filed my taxes on paper, via the USPS. Once upon a time, the post office would be jammed on April 15th with people rushing to get their tax returns mailed on time, nowadays the lobby is practically empty. Even if you don't want to download the forms and actually file on paper, I...

Misguided HP customer support approach included forced 15-minute call wait times

If I recall correctly, Dispair.com's own customer service motto is "We're not happy 'til you're not happy!"

Scout Motors’ new pickup and SUV EVs will start at “under $60,000”

We called the middle seat in the pickup the "knee banger" seat. But it beat riding in the back in the rain (or snow), especially on a long highway trip.

There’s another massive meat recall over Listeria—and it’s a doozy

Reminds me of what my dad used to say about pre-packaged food. "That stuff's not good for you. You don't know what's in it."

How London’s Crystal Palace was built so quickly

No, no, no! Philips screwdrivers come in sizes. Do not use the wrong size driver if you want to save yourself (and the next guy who has to deal with the screw and/or now mangled driver) a lot of grief. I think you are thinking of Reed & Prince. As for British threads, I recall my first...

Google’s “AI Overview” can give false, misleading, and dangerous answers

I'll admit that I haven't waded through all the comments to check, but I can't be the only one thinking, they don't call it "artificial" intelligence for nothing.

NOAA says ‘extreme’ Solar storm will persist through the weekend

If you don't see much, wait a bit and look again. I first looked at about midnight and saw little, at around 2:00 lots more to see, by 3:00 mostly gone. It can change quickly. Naked eye views were so so, but handheld cell phone pic's show a lot more color and detail.

Toyota has built an EV with a fake transmission, and we’ve driven it

I don't get why they didn't go all the way and have a manual choke that needs to be constantly adjusted as the "engine" warms up. When the '92 automatic that's my current daily driver is a little baulky on cold mornings I still sometimes find myself reaching for the choke that isn't there.

We now know how cats purr—why they purr is still up for debate

We had a drooler once. In my experience, some cats do (drool when they're happy, not food related) and some cats don't. Head bumps are the same, some cats are bunters, and some cats aren't. Some people try and figure out why cats do what they do, and others have more common sense don't.

Behold the world’s oldest sandals, buried in a “bat cave” over 6,000 years ago

The baskets are amazing (both workmanship and condition)! I wonder if anyone has attempted to determine what may have been stored in them.

Archaeologists find 500-year-old board game carved in ruins of Polish castle

Long ago, my grandfather taught me to play Nine Man Morris. IIRC we made our board from cardboard re-purposed from a cereal box (or perhaps it was the back of a notepad). The pieces were buttons borrowed from mom's sewing basket. I've long since forgotten the rules, given a lack of others who...
