I'm aware of the later iterations. While they do look better than my OG Pebble, that's not exactly a high bar to clear.I think you missed a couple of iterations after the OG.
The Pebble Steel is exactly what you're describing, and it was my all-time favorite smartwatch. If they release an identical model with smaller bezels, it's an instabuy from me.
Even as a former bulky, square Fossil watch wearer, I don't think the Steel looks all that great either. It's like 40% bezel and the screen is set so far back into the watch it looks like a shadow box.
My Pebble was my favorite smart watch at the time. At the time, it was pretty much the only smart watch. We've come a long way since then. I don't know what is be gaining by ditching a decade's worth of improvements.
Better battery life? If I was the kind of person to go spend a week shitting in the woods I might care, but I get two days out of my watch now, and I take a shower every day, so it already lasts twice as long as I need it to.
If they massively increased the resolution, it would be comparable for reading text in notifications, but I actually do benefit from the high resolution color display on my current watch. For example, I can see who's walking up to my front door by just tilting my wrist towards me, which is pretty handy. I can discreetly check in the middle of a meeting and decide if I need to go answer the door now or if it's just a package that can wait until I'm free.
