People started buying these not because of the speed or ease of use but the price. It offered a value that was leagues beyond its competitors.

Now that they hooked people its time to haul in the bait and force people into subscription models that are actually sustainable.

I liked louis rossman's take: Correcting an unsustainable business model isn't shady per se but if you treat your customers like that then you shouldn't be surprised of the backlash.
