I disagree with your first line: Apple built iMessage to facilitate communication with everyone--hence why it supports public protocols like SMS.

iPhone owners should have the choice to communicate with friends/family/co-workers no matter what type of phone they have, and Apple should respect that, given that (by all appearances) this system doesn't cost them a dime.
