I mean..."you need to buy a more limited very expensive device just to chat" is kinda a stupid position.
Live with it and use normal SMS/Email/whatever chat, pick a cross-platform app, or drive here and talk in person if it matters so much. Or don't talk anymore, if they are gonna be that much of a jerk I probably don't want to talk to them anymore anyway.
My first choice is something cross platform I can use from a desktop PC (Windows and Linux), web-browser (at work, when I can't install an app), and phone app (if I really don't have a computer handy).
