Am I supposed to feel bad for Winamp or its founders? AOL bought them and made them very rich. Yet somehow AOL is the bad guys for telling them no on producing products that were of questionable legality or removed ad revenue from the parent company? Ebil suits.
How is AOL saying no to starting a Rhapsody some stupid biz decision. From the 10 seconds I spent searching Rhapsody brings in about 50 million in revenue and that was in 2009. While 50 million is nothing to laugh at even today that is small potatoes for AOL which still has revenue in the half billion range. Spotify is still lossing money on 100 million revenue. Pandora about 80 million in revenue.
It did not matter what AOL did to winamp it was at its peak in 2000 and nothing was going to change that the competation was going to catch it. Its market share was always going to be taken by the pack in media player for the hardware used. It was the Ipod that won the mp3 player market and hence it was Itunes its pack in media player that won. In a different universe where Zune wins out it would be Zune media player. In another universe where Rio wins Music Match wins.
